When aout 19 years old, he had entered the service of Confederate president Jefferson Davis as his personal messenger from the time Davis relocated to Richmond from Montgomery, Alabama, in the summer of 1861. He would witness Davis's departure from the White House of the Confederacy in April 1865, writing, "On the Sunday night of the evacuation of Richmond, I was at the President's mansion, assisting in packing up to go South....When his carriage drove up to the door to carry him away to the depot, Mr. Davis lighted a cigar, took a seat in the conveyance, and was driven to the Danville depot, where he took the train for the South." |
