Watson Meredith Gentry of Tennessee was commissioned a surgeon by Gov. Isham G. Harris on June 14, 1861 with the rank of Major of Cavalry. He went out as surgeon of the 17th Tennessee Regiment Volunteers, and later was division surgeon of Bragg's army. The last two years of the war he was reassigned to post duty as surgeon in chief of hospitals at Montgomery, Alabama, his health having failed from the severity of field life. He had charge of nine hospitals with 2,300 beds. |
