He served in the U.S. Army, first as 2d lieutenant of artillery, and fought in the Mexican War. In March 1855 Johnston was appointed lieutenant colonel of the 1st U.S. Cavalry, and became quartermaster general of the army in June 1860. On May 14, 1861 Johnston was appointed brigadier general in the Confederate States Army, and participated in the battle of First Mannassas in July 1861. On August 31, 1861 he was promoted to full general, to rank from July 4. Johnston was wounded at Seven Pines in May 1862, and his command was given to Lee. Upon his return in November 1862, he was sent to command Confederate forces in the West. |
