John Newland Maffitt was born in Ireland and came to the United States. He was appointed to the U. S. Navy from North Carolina but resigned his commission at Lt. on May 2, 1861. Maffitt was appointed 1st Lt. in the Confederate Navy on May 8, 1861. He made Commander in April 1863 and then appointed Commander in the Provisional Navy in June 1864. Maffitt served on numerous ships during the war: CSS Savannah in 1861-1862, CSS Florida in 1862-1863, blockade runners Florrie and Lilian in 1864, CSS Albemarle in 1864, and blockade runner Owl in 1865. |
