He was born in Richmond, Virginia on August 9, 1842 and enlisted on April 25, 1861 as a Pvt. in the Richmond Fayette Artillery. His pre-war occupation was a clerk. Mittledorfer was discharged in 1862. However, he was drafted in Richmond on February 10, 1864 into Co. G, 1st Virginia Cavalry as a Pvt. Mittledorfer was listed as present on rolls until April 4, 1864 when he was noted as absent, sick with gonorrhea at Charlottesville Hospital. He was then transferred to Richmond Hospital on April 14. Mittledorfer returned to duty on July 30, 1864. He was present at Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865 and received his parole on April 22. After the war, Mittledorfer was a member of the R. E. Lee Camp No. 1, Confederate Veterans. He resided in Richmond and was a merchant. Mittledorfer died on July 31, 1898 and was buried in Hebrew Cemetery in Richmond, Virginia. His nickname was "The Fighting Jew." |
