"Southern Exposure: The Life and Times of C.R. Rees & Co. Richmond, Virginia," by D.A. Serrano: "Arriving in Richmond on St. Patrick's Day 1862 from his home in Harper's Ferry, seventeen-year-old John O'Farrell tried to enlist in Crenshaw's Battery. He was thought too young for such dangerous work, but for three days begged the captain and even the Governor for a chance to prove himself. John was finally enrolled and proudly got his portrait taken in what looks like a first issue Richmond Depot uniform. The boy gunner was lucky to survive several hard-fought battles, only to be captured at Saylor's Creek. In later life he would become a physician." Other: Residence Harper's Ferry WV; 17 years old.
