Photographed shortly after he immigrated to the United States, Patrick Cleburne was 21 and a veteran of the British army when he left Ireland in 1849. Landing in New Orleans, Cleburne went to Cincinnati and then settled in Helena, Arkansas, where he became a successful pharmacist, lawyer, and community leader. Fiercely devoted to his adopted region, Cleburne became colonel of the 15th Arkansas Infantry. Renowned for his personal bravery and aggressive leadership, Cleburne rose to the command of a division and earned the sobriquet "Stonewall of the West." He was killed at the Battle of Franklin, Tennessee, on November 30, 1864. |
